The Loud and Proud promotion came about as the result of a brainstorming session at a Branching Out training day, looking at ways to promote and improve the range of gay and lesbian fiction in public libraries.
Six authorities piloted the promotion; Leeds, Staffordshire, Croydon, North Yorkshire, Birmingham and Gloucestershire. Some authorities already had some gay and lesbian sections in their libraries, while others had only tentatively put their toes in the water.
The authorities involved worked together to select a stocklist. They also produced a 45-minute training session to be used with library staff involved in the promotion, to help address any concerns they might have about promoting this area of stock.
