How do we promote Black and Asian writing to white readers?

  • Include fiction titles by Black and Asian writers in all your fiction promotions.
  • Make sure that a percentage of titles in your face-on displays of fiction are by Black and Asian writers.
  • Pick up on mainstream successes such as Zadie Smith, Mike Gayle and Mike Phillips to run regular fiction promotions featuring a wider selection of Black and Asian writers.
  • Make Black History Month and similar promotions a real feature in your library.
  • Make sure that all your frontline staff have attended training on promoting Black and Asian literature and are aware of the stock.
  • Run staff discussions on how the reading experience allows every reader to walk around in somebody else's shoes - and that it's the only way we can all explore another way of life - and understand it better too.
  • Ensure that staff feel confident about answering questions from readers about the promotions and the stock.
