Is Black and Asian writing all from small presses?

There is a huge and rich variety of writing in English and in translation by Black writers.  Contemporary Asian writing is exciting, vibrant, and like Black writing, it crosses all genres of fiction and categories of non-fiction. It includes mainstream bestsellers, as well as small press books, cult fiction, imaginative literature, science fiction and comedy.

In any promotion that you do, you should plan to include a percentage and a range of work by Black and Asian writers. It would be useful to decide on a particular percentage and stick to it for all the promotions that you do, and ensure that when your popular displays empty, then the stock to fill them up also includes the same percentage of this stock.

If you are looking for titles by Black or Asian writers, and are not sure about whether a particular author is Asian, Black or white, look on the blurb about them in the book – if they want their nationality, race or roots to be known, they will say so there. If they don’t, it’s safe to assume they would rather not be categorised in that way.
