How do I make sure that change is embedded in the service?

After undertaking a consultation process with readers and talking with staff you will have an understanding of what needs doing. Make a list of the areas of the service into which you may need to make an input so that change is embedded.

1. Get the work involved included in the Annual Library Plan – find out which part of the procedure you need to influence to get the work included in the plan. Write a list of the steps that you will need to take to get the work written into the plan, so you have a plan of action.

2. You may need to influence stock policy and acquisition procedures. How would you get a percentage of stock bought and promoted – how might that be set up and monitored? You may need to sample some current stock to determine how the material is currently bought, how it is promoted and how it issues, as well as what readers think, in order to make your proposals for change more persuasive.

3. You will need to set up evaluation procedures. How is the training affecting staff attitudes? Is How is the stock being promoted, and how is it issuing? What do the readers think? Are things changing? It will be important to feedback these kind of results so that you can see what works, and what doesn'’t.

4. How will you approach staff training? Can you build an element into the staff induction procedures? Refresher courses? Customer care? Stock knowledge sessions? You may need to talk to your training section to ensure that an integrated approach is being taken.

5.  Build in regular consultations with readers in and outside of the library to continue to refresh your ideas and services.
