The titles chosen for this sampler all have an element of tension about them - but that is where the similarity ends.
Tension is a strange sensation. The world can be used to describe an atmosphere, a situation, a sexual stand-off or a period of waiting or suspense. Tension in real life is usually an uncomfortable sensation but in fiction it is a delicious pleasure. Tense books are the ones that really grip, that take you out of yourself completely - they're usually the ones you stay up late to finish even when you didn't mean to!
