backSkills audit:
The initial assessment

In February 1999, UCE sent out a skills audit to each Branching Outer, in order to enable them to assess their own skills and competence in the five areas considered to be most relevant to the work they would be doing over the remainder of the project, i.e.:

    • book-based skills
    • promotional skills
    • ICT
    • general management, and
    • research and evaluation

To briefly summarise key points, the audit revealed that almost all participants felt that they needed further training in each of these five areas, and there was a notable lack of confidence in particular in promotional and ICT skills. At the same time, most Branching Outers felt that they had good networking skills and good time management skills, both clearly vital to the work they were expected to do.
