Gary Wilder
used to be in a rock band which never quite made the big time and
now, in his forties, he runs a guitar shop. I suspected a kind of
High Fidelity lookalike and was almost put off. It turned out to be
something completely different. Not just different from High Fidelity
but different from anything else I have read.
It is
very funny, I embarrassed my friends by laughing out loud in the departure
lounge at Heathrow. It takes a while to get fully into the book but
stick with it. Weird things start to happen to Gary. First his hair
starts to float - gel solves that - but later he starts to have spells
of weightlessness. Next morning he wakes to feel something solid on
his stomach. He has floated up to the ceiling during the night and
is pressed up against the light fitting. His efforts to solve and
conceal his problem are very funny.
