If you have a number of trainees working in your library you can expect a number of small promotions and a range of changing face-forward displays to appear for short periods of time. There are choices within the course that are offered to trainees, so you should not see too many similar promotions appearing. However, some repetition will happen if you have a large staff complement. Where print materials are offered to support promotions, alternatives are available so that the presentation remains fresh.
Staff doing Frontline will be engaging with the public, looking at the library with new eyes, talking with you and each other about aspects of library work and borrower behaviour. In the first module, trainees undertake a short informal interview with a range of five borrowers, discovering how they use the library. The quotes that trainees collect can act as useful source of qualitative user feedback. There are other types of interaction within the course that involves trainees talking to borrowers about their reading choices. Trainees will also be talking to staff colleagues who are not undertaking the course about their work, and asking for support.
At the end of every module, trainees will meet briefly with their supervisor to talk over key issues and their progress. This may be done by phone, or email if the supervisor is working remotely from the trainee.
If you have a number of trainees undertaking the course you can expect a lively library with staff who will be challenging traditional approaches to promotion and display, and trying out new ways of working. The course centres on books; it sets out to be demanding but also enjoyable - so hopefully they will also be having fun. Trainees will also be receiving constructive criticism on their practice from supervisors, as well as specific praise for what they do.
