How is the training organised?

The course is taken online by the trainee accessing the Frontline website.  The trainee reads course material online and makes entries into their own personal Learning Log on their own area of that website. The course sets practical tasks which are undertaken as part of their work in the library, and the findings are recorded in the Learning Log.  That work is then assessed by their Frontline supervisor.

The practical way that the course is organised in a library authority is on a cascade model.  There is a Co-ordinator for the course, who is the central point of contact in your authority.  The Co-ordinator has taken the course and has supervised key trainees, who in turn supervise others.  No one supervises unless they have taken the course themselves.  All trainees have the potential to supervise others; who acts as supervisor is a decision usually taken by the Co-ordinator in consultation with managers.

Supervisors can be managers, colleagues, or juniors – the idea is for staff to support each other to complete the course without necessarily following traditional management structures.  This offers an opportunity to involve staff with new roles and new ways of working together.  Since the course is taken online, and supervision can work remotely, it also offers opportunities for geographically distant colleagues to work together.  In one or two authorities, the Head of Service has undertaken the course as a trainee, supervised by a much more junior member of staff.
