For the Barons Court Reading Group we used to buy multiple copies - however the group has grown to 14 including me so I can no longer buy one for each person.
So far I have chosen titles with multiple copies in hardback and paperback. So, Orange or Booker Prize and Richard and Judy reads are our staple! Generally, there are enough copies for each person who plans to attend.
We had 10 at our last meeting and we discussed Kate Mosse's Labyrinth. We have 2 or 3 members who will buy books if we can't get books to them in time.
Members do suggest titles, but it is not always possible these days given the size of the group. One option is for me top up existing supplies, which I will do if we have a few copies already in stock. With only 6 libraries in the borough, 6 is usually the maximum number we would purchase for any one title.
We don't yet have a rigid system for passing on books between groups, but it happens on an informal basis. Groups meet once a month - we have three, Hammersmith (which is full and has a waiting list), Barons Court (which should be declared full but I can't bear to turn people away) and Sands End.
