Babel Guides

Babel Guides are immensely useful. Each volume contains a reader-friendly description of a book, written with an English audience in mind, and an extract of the translated text so you can get a feel for what that writer is actually like. Also a very useful database of all fiction translated into English from the particular language since 1950. Very handy on the classics but good on more recent writers too. Their website offers lots of free reader-goodies, plus the chance to buy the Babel Guides and thousands of other literature in translation titles at a discount.
