We don't have any Black readers in our library

Before you act on this statement, check.  Like lots of people, Black and Asian readers don’t always ask for help.

We tend to notice readers who ask questions and who actually borrow books. Where staff have carried out objective observation of who uses the library, they have been heartened to notice that there are more Black readers than they previously thought.  Young Black and Asian people may well be coming in to use the internet.

If you really have no Black or Asian readers in the library do you have Black and Asian residents? Look at the demographic surveys of your area – do you have Indian restaurants, are there Black church congregations, Black community groups? That’s the place to start to find new readers to consult.

You can always ask white readers about Black writing too.
