Running the meetings

Both philosophically and practically, we have gone for an open approach to our sessions. The member of staff is the facilitator (the Arts Council ought to offer a prize to encourage someone to come up with a better name) not the group leader. The fact that everybody has read the two books which are up for discussion puts all participants on a level footing and tends to stimulate free-flowing debate - everyone will have some personal insight to contribute and no-one has to set it going or deliver (or be expected to deliver) the "received wisdom". But, precisely because facilitators are not putting themselves up as the literature experts with all the answers, they needn't feel exposed when taking responsibility for the group and its dynamics (e.g., making sure that everybody gets a chance to have their say).

It is certainly our experience that reading groups only work in a library setting if there is a member of staff willing and able to take this role - basically to be there, make sure everybody feels welcome, sort out refreshments and, most importantly, sort out the logistics of having the right books on time. This may lead into the delicate area of work's time versus own time - an area where each library authority will inevitably steer its own, probably not very clear, course. However, as well as with reading groups, this facilitating role is one which enables library staff to find a very appropriate role within literature development in general, and one with which librarians should feel comfortable. Its main requirements are enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. (Perhaps it should be our professional organisation which offers the prize!)
