The exercise

Divide the participants into groups of 5 people.  Give each group a 1lb box of Roses Chocolates.

Part 1

  • Ask each group member to select and remove their favourite flavour. They can eat it if they wish.
  • Ask two or three people how they selected their favourite flavour.
  • What helped them? Shape, wrapper colour, flavour guide?

Part 2

  • Remove the illustrated selection guides from the box flaps.
  • Give each group a supply of foil cut up into 6" x 3" sizes.
  • Ask the group to wrap the remaining chocolates with foil to disguise their shape and put them back in the box.
  • Ask each group to pass on their foil wrapped chocolates to the next group moving the chocolates in a clockwise direction.
  • Ask the participants to choose a chocolate from their foil covered selection. They must say what they hope to have chosen, then unwrap it, eat it if they wish, and say if they made the correct choice and whether they were happy or disappointed with their choice.
  • Discuss how this felt compared with Exercise 1. Who ate the chocolate and who didn’t, who had a good/bad experience, how did they approach it differently, with what expectations?

Part 3

  • Pass the boxes on to the next group.
  • Ask everyone to sit close enough to each other to touch the person next to them.
  • Ask everyone to close their eyes, then pass round the box again.  They each choose a chocolate, unwrap it and can eat it if they wish but they must not open their eyes.
  • Discuss how this felt compared with Exercise 1 and 2. Who ate the chocolate, who didn't, who had a good/bad experience, how did they approach it differently, with what expectations?
