The exercise

Divide the participants into groups of no more than five.  Give each group a set of the cards and a set of the tools

  • Ask the groups to read the cards and place them randomly on the table.
  • Ask them to quickly place each tool on the activity for which you would most likely need it.  Keep it speedy, simple and straightforward.
  • Now ask the groups to move each tool one card to the left.  Ask them to find a use for the tool in the new activity it partners. Be inventive!
  • Have you found a new use for a tool?  Has putting the tool on that card widened your definition of the activity?

If time, do that once again.
