Follow-up discussion

Ask the pairs to select one of the books that they have discussed and introduce it in turn to everyone.  They should simply describe the kind of book it is, and how they might promote it to a wide readership in the library.  Ask them not to let anybody guess whether they liked the book, or not.

One of the aims of this final group discussion is to demonstrate the difference between personal reading preferences (to which we are all entitled) and the professional job of selecting books for a promotion.  Staff need to select books that they hate to include in promotions if they are to attract a range of readers.  Promoting books does not mean recommending them.  Ideally, in any display of face-on books, half should be ones that you wouldn't personally choose to read.
