A collection run on these lines will obviously have circulation implications. North Tyneside had to ensure that items were distinguishable from the general lending stock so that they could be easily identified by both staff and customers. Coloured date labels were produced in house. In addition, a coloured flyer was inserted into the jacket of each book indicating that the item was 7-day loan only.
As items are exempt from the requests system, North Tyneside had to override the automatic 'item on hold' alert which is triggered by the library circulation system when any requested item is checked in.
The shelving for the new collection to also look different and a section of face-out shelves was set up in a prominent part of the fiction library. The shelves were erected three weeks before the launch date and covered with posters and examples of the new date labels and flyers to inform customers of the loan regulations and the idea behind the collection.
North Tyneside's major book supplier, Askews, agreed to sponsor the promotion and provided funding for stationery and publicity materials together with an extra discount for titles selected to make up the core collection. 225 books were chosen, mostly fiction from popular authors. A small amount of non-fiction was selected using the lists in The Bookseller. All of the items were given the new coloured date labels and flyers. It was decided that there was no need for spine labels indicating genre or Dewey number so all items took on a uniform look.
